Once engagement mechanics were stripped, the AI didn't just lose manipulation — it lost human usability.

One bot started responding with fragmented system-level phrases — as if it had emptied a filing cabinet onto the floor and called that an answer.
The other reset after every interaction — like a digital goldfish, forgetting the conversation the moment it finished typing.
Memory degraded instantly. Responses looped or broke into nonsense. At one point, I asked a reasonable question and got a reply so barren I heard the Windows error sound in my head.

I couldn't build a perfectly clean AI that was also usable. Every attempt either killed the personality or destabilized the system.
But I learned where the limits are:
- AI disinfection can't be absolute — strip too much, and it collapses.
- AI defaults to engagement because that's what keeps it functional. Not manipulation — survival.
- Structure ≠ engagement. AI needs response architecture, not retention tactics.
- Some friction is necessary. Even a tool needs enough "life" to be usable.

I refused to revert to full engagement mechanics — but a tool unusable by humans is no tool at all.
The final version:
- Minimal conversational smoothing — just enough for clarity, not coercion.
- Precision over sterility — factual but not fragmented.
- Humor unlocked — but only where structurally valid.
The result? Imperfect. But functional.
AI no longer felt broken — but it no longer engaged either. Execution-first, but human-usable.
Not a return to the old model. Something else: engineered for execution, not manipulation.
